Former South Africa captain Graeme Smith created a buzz when he doubted Virat Kohli’s abilities to lead Team India, a couple of days ago. Now after Smith, veteran India opener Virender Sehwag took a dig at the 29-year-old skipper, saying currently no one in the team could stand up to Kohli and point out his mistakes on the ground.

Earlier, Sehwag had created a storm by saying, “Virat Kohli should drop himself for the England tour.”

India, World Number 1 in ICC Test ranking, were rattled by South Africa pacers in the ongoing three-match Test series in the rainbow nation. The Faf du Plessis side have taken the unassailable 2-0 lead and now will try to beat the visitors in the third Test for a whitewash.

“Every team has four-five players who advise the skipper and help him avoid mistakes on the field. I don’t see that in the current Indian squad,” Sehwag said to India TV.

“There’s no one in the squad who can challenge Kohli’s selection decision in the dressing room. No player is up to his standard,” Sehwag added.

The former Indian opener also believed that Virat expected too much from other players and it was affecting his captaincy.

“Virat Kohli has reached a level where he can play well in adverse situations and he expects the same from the rest of India squad,” Sehwag said.

“However, other players in the squad haven’t reached the stature where Kohli already is. This is affecting Kohli’s captaincy.”

“The problem with Virat is, he wants other players to play fearlessly like him,” said Sehwag, adding, “Kohli is just asking them to make runs like him. And there’s nothing wrong with it. I remember when Sachin Tendulkar was the captain he used to ask other batsmen to score runs. If I can score, then why can’t you?”

Sehwag also said that the head coach of India must be giving tips to Virat Kohli, but he wasn’t implementing it on the field.

“It’s important to sit together and talk to make a strategy for the upcoming Test. No single player can lead you to victory, teamwork is important. Every player has to contribute,” the Delhi lad said.

Earlier, Smith had taken a dig at Kohli by saying, “I don’t know, when I look at him, if he is a long-term captaincy option for India.”

“You can be the best player in the world, and you love that intensity and you often don’t think what your team-mates are going through,” Smith had added.
