Football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo spoke for the second time on the alleged rape for which he was sued in the United States.

The Juventus star took to Twitter on Wednesday to comment on the accusations against him, writing in English and his native Portuguese. Calling rape “an abominable crime”, the 33-year-old Ronaldo said that it goes against who he is and his beliefs.

“I firmly deny the accusations being issued against me. Rape is an abominable crime that goes against everything that I am and believe in,” said Ronaldo.

“Keen as I may be to clear my name, I refuse to feed the media spectacle created by people seeking to promote themselves at my expense,” he added.

The football star, who jointly holds the record for five Ballon d’Or awards, expressed confidence that his “clear conscious” will tide him over the probe “if any”.

“My clear conscious will thereby allow me to await with tranquillity the results of any and all investigations,” read his second tweet.

Ronaldo’s comments come a day after he rejected the charges as “fake news” during a live chat on Instagram.

“What they said today, fake — fake news,” the 33-year-old star of the Portuguese national team said in a post on Monday that was later deleted.

According to the BBC, a woman who identified herself as Kathryn Mayorga filed a lawsuit this past Friday in Clark County, Nevada, accusing Ronaldo of raping her in a Las Vegas hotel room in 2009.

In the 32-page complaint filed last month, the 34-year-old said that Ronaldo raped her while she repeatedly screamed no adding that the Portuguese football star apologise “stating he was sorry, he was usually a gentleman.”

The lawsuit alleges that Ronaldo told his representatives that “she said ‘no’ and ‘stop’ several times.”

On Monday, the Las Vegas police said they had reopened the criminal investigation.

Reports say that Ronaldo and his team coerced her into signing a settlement and nondisclosure agreement in 2009. Mayorga claimed she received $375,000 in exchange for her silence.

The lawsuit claims the agreement should be voided because she was “incompetent and lacked the mental capacity to participate in negotiations and settlement of her claims due to the injuries suffered during the initial sexual assault.”

The suit also called for the agreement to be dismissed because it amounted to concealment of a crime for which there is no statute of limitations.

The alleged rape was first reported by German publication Der Spiegel in 2017. Ronaldo’s representatives had then denied the rape allegations.

In an interview with Der Spiegel, Mayorga, who has a degree in journalism from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, said she was inspired to come forward in part by the #MeToo movement that has exposed the sexual abuse of women by powerful men.
