India’s wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant was heard sledging Australian speedster Pat Cummins on the stumps mic on the fifth Day of the opening Test match in Adelaide Oval.

With Indian bowlers removing Australia’s top six batters before the lunch on Monday, and the Oz team trying to build a partnership, Pant was trying to unsettle Cummins with a few remarks from behind the stumps.

In the stump mic, Pant was heard saying, “C’mon Patty, c’mon Patty” and “it is not easy to bat here”. The stylish Delhi keeper-batsman was also heard calling spin wizard Ravichandran Ashwin ‘Ashley’.

When Pant’s video sledging the Aussie paceman was put in front of legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar and former Australia captain Michael Clarke, the duo had different opinions.

“I don’t agree with that (Pant sledging Cummins),” Gavaskar was quoted as saying by the official broadcasters. “It is good when you say things to motivate your bowler but you should not talk straight to the batsman.”

“Also, you should not sledge the opposition’s fast-bowler when the next venue is Perth,” Gavaskar added. Gavaskar also further explained that now Pant was well settled in the team. “In England where he made his debut, he was constantly heard saying ‘Ashwin sir’ or ‘Ashwin bhai’ but now it has become ‘Ash’ and even ‘Ashley’, ”Gavaskar said.

However, in Clarke’s opinion, it was “good”.

“It is good (Pant sledging). The idea is to create an environment where the batsman will feel uncomfortable with some banter. These two guys probably know each other well during their time together in the IPL with Delhi (Daredevils —now known as Capitals),” Clarke said.
