Former India captain Sourav Ganguly described the unveiling of the first-look poster of his biopic, Dada: The Sourav Ganguly Story, on his 54th birthday as the “best birthday gift ever”.

The film, starring Rajkummar Rao in the lead role, is set to release in theatres on May 14, 2027.

Poster recreates iconic Lord’s celebration

Reacting to the poster launch, Ganguly said the occasion made his birthday even more memorable.

“Birthdays are always special and unveiling the first look of my biopic Dada – The Sourav Ganguly Story today makes this one even more memorable. It is indeed the best birthday gift ever,” he said.

The former skipper added that the artwork instantly transported him back to one of the defining moments of his playing career and expressed confidence in Rao’s portrayal of his journey.

“The poster brings back a highly cherished moment from my cricketing journey. Rajkummar has approached the role with great sincerity and commitment,” Ganguly said.

He also wished the cast and crew success ahead of the film’s release.

“I wish him and the entire team my very best, and I hope fans enjoy the movie on the big screen on May 14, 2027,” he added.

The first-look poster, unveiled by Rao on Ganguly’s birthday, recreates one of the most iconic moments in Indian cricket history. It shows the actor standing shirtless on the Lord’s balcony, reliving Ganguly’s unforgettable shirt-waving celebration after India’s dramatic victory in the 2002 NatWest Trophy final, with the Indian tricolour forming the backdrop.

A tribute to one of India’s most influential captains

Widely credited with reshaping Indian cricket in the early 2000s, Ganguly led the team through a transformative period marked by fearless leadership and memorable overseas performances.

Under his captaincy, India registered a historic Test series win in Pakistan in 2004, earned a drawn Test series in Australia in 2003-04, and famously ended Australia’s 15-match winning streak during the landmark 2-1 home Test series victory in 2001.

Ganguly also guided India to a shared ICC Champions Trophy 2002 title with Sri Lanka national cricket team, the final of the 2003 Cricket World Cup, and the memorable 2002 NatWest Trophy triumph—the celebration that now forms the centrepiece of his biopic’s first-look poster.
