Ireland captain Lorcan Tucker described his side’s landmark T20I victory over India as “pretty special” after the hosts stunned the reigning world champions by 34 runs in the series opener, crediting his players’ resilience and composure for scripting history.
Ireland recovered from a precarious 36/3 to post 182/9 before bowling India out for 148 in 18.5 overs, sealing their first-ever T20I win over India and taking a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
“It’s pretty special. To beat the world champions at home in the first game of the season is a fantastic feeling,” Tucker said after the match.
“We had some tough periods, but the lads stayed in the contest. We worked hard, stuck to our plans and got the reward in the end. We also had two debutants who were absolutely outstanding.”
Leading from the front, Tucker anchored Ireland’s recovery with a composed half-century, his second successive fifty as captain, sharing a vital partnership with Gareth Delany, whose 49 shifted the momentum after the early collapse.
The wicketkeeper-batter admitted India’s disciplined new-ball attack had made scoring difficult in the powerplay.
“They bowled really well at the start and kept hitting good lengths. They didn’t give us much to work with and it almost felt like a Test match for a while. Our focus was simply to stay in the game, build a partnership and take our chances when they came later in the innings.”
Ireland’s bowlers then mirrored India’s disciplined approach to dismantle the visitors’ batting line-up. Debutants Matthew Hollard and Jai Moondra impressed alongside Matthew Humphreys, with Hollard and Humphreys claiming three wickets apiece.
Tucker revealed the bowlers consciously took inspiration from India’s first-innings approach.
“We learned a lot from the way India bowled. They didn’t stray from their lengths, so we wanted to do exactly the same. The debutants showed great skill and accuracy, executed the plans brilliantly and deserve enormous credit.”
The skipper also acknowledged the contribution of Cricket Ireland’s coaching and support staff, saying the result reflected the hard work being put in behind the scenes.
“Everyone at Cricket Ireland is incredibly dedicated. It’s nice to reward all that effort with performances and results like this.”
With one match remaining, Ireland are now on the verge of securing their first-ever bilateral T20I series victory over India.
“A series win at home against India would be incredibly special. The atmosphere today was fantastic, the crowd were brilliant, and we’re excited to come back and try to finish the job.”
