With India perennial favourites whenever they step on to the field against their neighbour Bangladesh, and winning majority of their matches, the Bangladeshi fans and media have adopted strange and controversial strategies to put the pressure on the Indians.
The most recent incident being when a Bangladeshi fan photoshopped Mahendra Singh Dhoni&’s severed head onto Bangladesh pacer Taskin Ahmed&’s arms. Probably due to its poor taste, the picture has gone viral on social media.
The second instance was as controversial local Bangladesh Cola television commercial (TVC), which took a swipe at the Indian Cricket Team who were in Bangladesh for their away series comprising of lone Test match and three One Day Internationals (ODIs).
The commercial starts with an Indian Bengali man striking a conversation with a guy from Pakistan. The Bengali fellow is making mockery of Pakistan&’s recent 3-0 loss at the hands of Bangladesh. He continues to poke fun at the beating received by Pakistan on their tour to Bangladesh till the Pakistani man gets offended and hands him a bamboo stick and wait for India&’s embarrassing turn.
A Bangladeshi newspaper then made a Photoshop caricature of the Indian Cricket team when India were humbled by Bangladesh in the three match ODI Series in 2015. Bangladeshi cricketer Mustafizur was seen holding a paper cutter and the words “We’ve used it. You can use it too”.
Seven members of the Indian team are visible at the bottom of the caricature with half-bald hairstyles, including Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Shikhar Dhawan among others.
While such distasteful off-field tactics are unlikely to yield any results on the pitch, it will surely have rankled our players who will let their bat do the talking on Sunday&’s mega Final in the Asia Cup T20.
