Atletico Madrid strengthened their grip on the Champions League quarter-final with a clinical 2-0 win over Barcelona in the first leg at Camp Nou on Wednesday night.

Goals from Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth secured a crucial away victory for Diego Simeone’s side, who capitalised on key moments despite Barcelona dominating possession for large parts of the game.

“In games like these, with teams that know each other so well, someone has to produce a special moment. Alvarez scored a magical free kick,” Player of the Match Julian Alvarez said, as per the Champions League website.

“I don’t think my Atleti had ever won at Camp Nou. It’s very difficult. They’re arguably the best team in Europe, along with Paris and Bayern. Through good teamwork, we were able to capitalise on key moments in the match. The second goal gave us more confidence, and it’s a shame we couldn’t extend our lead further,” Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone said.

The contest turned just before half-time when Pau Cubarsi was sent off in the 42nd minute for a last-man foul on Giuliano Simeone, leaving Barcelona a man down in a crucial phase of the match.

Atletico made their numerical advantage count in first-half stoppage time, as Alvarez produced a moment of brilliance, curling a stunning 25-metre free kick into the top corner to silence the home crowd.

Barcelona pushed for a response early in the second half, with Marcus Rashford coming close from a free kick that rattled the crossbar. However, Atletico remained disciplined and dangerous on the counter.

Their persistence paid off in the 70th minute when Matteo Ruggeri delivered a precise cross from the left, which Sorloth met with a clinical close-range finish to double Atletico’s lead.

The 2-0 result leaves Barcelona with a steep task ahead in the return leg, while Atletico take a commanding advantage into the second leg. The winner of the tie will face either Arsenal or Sporting in the semi-finals.
