India’s Vishvanath Suresh produced one of the standout performances of the tournament, defeating reigning world champion and World No. 1 Sanzhar Tashkenbay in a dominant 5-0 verdict to storm into the semifinals of the Asian Boxing Championships 2026 in Ulaanbaatar on Saturday.

Competing in the men’s 50kg (flyweight) category, Vishvanath delivered a tactically astute display, using his speed and precision to outclass the Kazakh boxer and register a statement win on the continental stage.

The Chennai-born boxer has been on a steady rise, transitioning seamlessly from a decorated youth career to the senior circuit. He entered the tournament as the reigning national champion, having clinched gold at the Elite Men’s National Boxing Championships earlier this year with a commanding 5-0 win over Rishi Singh.

Vishvanath first made his mark internationally in 2022, winning gold at both the IBA Youth Men’s World Boxing Championships and the ASBC Asian Youth Boxing Championships. He has since continued to impress, adding a bronze at the 2024 Asian U-22 Championships and a gold at the BFI Federation Cup in 2025.

Known for his sharp footwork, ring intelligence, and ability to control distance, Vishvanath is now emerging as a serious medal contender at the international level, backed by training at the Army Sports Institute and support from the Boxing Federation of India.

India’s strong run continued in the women’s draw, where Ankushita Boro secured a convincing 4-1 win over Kazakhstan’s Laura Yessenkeldi in the 65 kg category to reach the semifinals. She will next face Chinese Taipei’s Nien-Chin Chen, a World Boxing Finals gold medallist and Paris 2024 Olympic bronze medallist, in a high-stakes clash.

In the men’s division, Narender advanced with a dominant 5-0 victory over the UAE’s Orkhan Aghayev, booking his place in the semifinals. He is set to take on China’s Bayikewuzi Danabieke, a bronze medallist at both the 2022 Asian Games and the 2025 World Championships.

However, it was the end of the road for Aditya in the men’s 65 kg category, as he went down 0-5 to Uzbekistan’s Abdulloh Madaminov in the quarterfinals.

With multiple semifinalists and a headline-grabbing upset, India’s campaign at the Asian Boxing Championships continues to gather momentum in Ulaanbaatar.
