KOLKATA, 8 MARCH: The last and the longest Classic of the season – The Calcutta St. Leger (Grade III) is the star attraction for tomorrow afternoon. Just three runners are in the fray. Horses are normally not entered for 2,800m race at this time of the season. However, even with
a bait of over Rs 26 lakhs for the winner, there is no taker for the handsome stake for the fourth place of Rs 2.16 lakhs.
Still it could be a match race for the Classic. Artesia had finished ahead of Arabian Warrior in the Queen’s Cup. Terms of this race allows her a sex allowance of 1.5 kilograms. So at this weight the Multidimensional filly appears to be unassailable. Trained by Manvendra Singh, Artesia will be ridden by C Alford. The supporting Midnight Cowboy Cup, a terms race over 1,200m, is a real teaser. Except for Shershah, all other five runners are in with good chances. Based on the electrifying win of Rising Power in his last run, this column fancies the Warrshan horse. The Javed Khan trainee will be ridden by Shezad Khan. Selections:
