Alan Shearer, the Premier League’s all-time top scorer, saw one of his records tumble on Tuesday as Harry Kane notched his 37th and 38th goals of 2017 in the Premier League against Southampton and the former Newcastle United legend was quick to congratulate the Tottenham Hotspur striker.

Kane, going into Tuesday’s clash with the Saints, was level on Alan Shearer’s 1995 calendar year record of 36 strikes but quickly broke the record with a close-ranger header in the 22nd minute.

And the 24-year-old would double his tally for the night well before the half-time whistle, tapping-in from four yards after some good work from Dele Alli and Heung-Min Son.
Kane’s brace, which could turn into a treble before 90 minutes are up at Wembley, also saw him overtake Lionel Messi as Europe’s leading scorer in 2017 with a overall tally of 56.
The Barcelona superstar, who does not play again in 2017 with the winter break ensuing in Spain, has 55 goals to his name this year, while PSG forward Edinson Cavani, Real Madrid striker Cristiano Ronaldo and Bayern Munich frontman Robert Lewandowski are all tied on 53 goals.
The Premier League’s reigning Golden Boot holder, Kane is in pole position to scoop the award for the third year running as he tops the scoring charts with a tally of 17 goals in 20 games (the 20th is still going on at the moment).
In the bulld-up to Tuesday’s clash, Kane has spoken of his intent of breaking Alan Shearer’s all-time record of 260 goals and if he keeps going at his current pace, there’s no reason why the Spurs striker won’t be able to accomplish the feat.
