Uruguay defeated Saudi Arabia in Rostov, courtesy of a Luis Suarez goal, who was making his 100th appearance for the La Celeste, to secure their place in the knockout phase of the tournament. Their win also means both Egypt and Saudi Arabia are eliminated, with Russia being the other team to qualify from Group A.

Saudi Arabia had a far better performance than the one in 5-0 loss to the hosts but a poor mistake from replacement goalkeeper Mohammed Al Owais handed the South Americans the winner in Rostov.

A corner from left taken by Carlos Sanchez was missed by the keeper, with Suárez on hand to knock home and become the first Uruguay player to score at three World Cups.

The Asian giants were unable to create any clear chances, and they are now without a win in 12 World Cup matches.

Uruguay will now take on hosts Russia, in a clash that will determine who finishes as the group winner.
