South African pacer Vernon Philander claimed three wickets to help the visitors dominate England in the first session of Day 1 of the first Test at Lord’s on Thursday.
Captain Joe Root (33*) and Ben Stokes (4) were batting as England reached 82/4 in 25 overs at Lunch.
Skipper Root’s plan to bat first after winning the toss backfired him as England’s top-order collapsed like dominoes.
Openers Alastair Cook and Keaton Jennings lost their wickets cheaply for three and eight runs respectively, while No.3 batsman Garry Balance (20) also failed to impress much.
Wicketkeeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow also lost his wicket after scoring just 10 runs.
For South Africa, Philander took the scalp of both the openers within first six overs and dismissed Bairstow in the 23rd over to tighten his grip over the innings.
Fast bowler Morne Morkel claimed the wicket of Balance after trapping him LBW in the 14th over.
