In a landmark moment for Indian professional golf, 170 leading players from the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) will participate in a first-of-its-kind player auction ahead of the inaugural season of 72 The League.

The high-profile auction, scheduled to take place in the national capital on Monday, will see professionals from 11 countries go under the hammer as six franchises look to assemble competitive squads for the league’s debut edition.

A total of 60 slots are up for grabs, with each franchise building a team of 10 golfers. The overall auction purse has been pegged at ₹6 crore, underlining the league’s strong financial backing and ambitious vision for its first season.

Billed as India’s first exclusive national professional golf league, 72 The League is set to tee off on February 21 and will conclude with the grand finale on March 6. The tournament represents a significant structural shift in how professional golf is packaged and presented in the country.

For the auction, the 170 registered golfers have been divided into three categories — Platinum, Gold and Silver — based on the 2025 Order of Merit rankings of the Professional Golf Tour of India.

The top 30 players feature in the Platinum bracket, those ranked between 31 and 60 fall into the Gold category, while the remaining golfers form the Silver pool. The tiered structure is expected to trigger strategic bidding as franchises balance marquee signings with squad depth.

The inaugural edition will be staged across three premier venues in Delhi NCR: Classic Golf & Country Club, Jaypee Greens Golf Course, and Qutab Golf Course. The selection of established championship venues adds further prestige to the league’s opening season.

With many of the PGTI’s top-ranked professionals set to feature, the competition is poised to become one of the most competitive and commercially structured platforms in Indian golf history.

The franchise-based model, combined with an auction system, mirrors successful league formats seen in other sports and is expected to enhance fan engagement and commercial viability.

Designed specifically for television and digital audiences, 72 The League will adopt a fast-paced, high-impact match-play format aimed at making the sport more accessible and engaging for viewers. By shortening match durations and intensifying head-to-head contests, the league seeks to broaden golf’s appeal beyond its traditional audience base.

As the countdown begins, the upcoming auction promises drama, strategy and high-stakes bidding — setting the tone for what could be a transformative chapter in Indian professional golf.
