Happy Ugadi 2019: The Telugu Samvatsara 2076 begins today and people in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka are ushering in their new year, celebrating it as Ugadi. The Telugu and Kannada societies traditionally celebrate the first day of the luni-solar calendar as their new year’s day. The festival is called Yugadi in Karnataka, and Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra.

Yugadi or Ugadi, meaning the beginning of a new age, is a portmanteau of Sanskrit words ‘Yuga’ and ‘Adi’. Many believe Lord Brahma created the universe on this day marking the beginning of the Satyayuga – one of the four eras in Hindu mythology.
