Demanding inclusion in the Scheduled Tribe list of India, thousands of Meiteis on Sunday took part in a mass rally in Manipur&’s capital Imphal.

According to sources, the rally witnessed the highest number of turnout ever in the state and was organised by the Coordinating Body on Schedule Tribe Demand Committee.

“The Meiteis who identify themselves as Yelhoumee (original inhabitants/indigenous people) claimed that they do not enjoy constitutional safeguards and demanded that the valley district be given constitutional safeguards as in the other hill districts of the state”, the sources said.

While the rally saw overwhelming participation of people from all walks of life, a separate public meet was also held at Hapta Kangjeibung.
