Make sure you eat all the right foods, which will give proper nutrition to your growing child. Here are some foods you must avoid during your pregnancy.

There’s nothing a mother wants more than wanting to protect her child but that doesn’t necessarily start after the birth of your baby. It is important to give your baby protection the nine months before it is born as well. So make sure you eat all the right foods, which will give proper nutrition to your growing child. To help you through this process, here are some foods you must avoid during your pregnancy.

Caffeine products:

Having more than 200g of caffeine, which is present in tea, coffee, cocoa and soft drinks, in a day can be harmful for your pregnancy. High levels of caffeine can cause miscarriage and the baby being underweight.

Processed foods

 

When eating for two make sure to provide your baby with healthy nutrients for its growth and development. Avoid foods that are high in calories and sugar content as it may lead to excess weight gain and complications at the time of birth.

Unpasteurised milk and dairy products

 

Pasteurisation is the process of heating milk to a certain temperature to kill any harmful bacteria. Unpasteurised or raw milk has been known to cause infections and must be avoided.

Undercooked meat

 

Raw meat contains several bacteria and parasites and its consumption increases the risk of infections and can lead to several birth defects. Make sure that the meat is fully cooked before consumption. Also avoid eating fish with high levels of mercury such as swordfish, tuna and sea bass. High levels of mercury can cause brain damage to the baby.

Unwashed vegetables:

 

Fruits and vegetables should be thoroughly washed before consumption to remove all bacteria that may have been deposited. It is also better to cook sprouts before eating as they may contain Salmonella (bacteria) that enter the seeds and are difficult to wash off.

There is a latex substance present in raw or unripe papaya that may cause uterine contractions and is best to avoid. Ripe papaya, however, is highly recommended to deal with both constipation and heartburn.

Consuming foods that are high in fat or are canned will add on weight apart from pregnancy weight. It will also increase chances of cholesterol and gestational diabetes. Moreover, it will be harder to lose the weight post pregnancy.

Raw or undercooked eggs

Raw, undercooked or runny eggs may contain salmonella and can cause vomiting, diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps. Also make sure to avoid dishes made with raw eggs, such as mayonnaise and chocolate mousse. It is best to have hard-boiled eggs or well-cooked omelets.
