Drunk on juice? Is that even possible? The newest resident in the City of Joy would have one believe so. Truth be told, although the fare at Drunken Monkey would not make one tipsy in the slightest as alcohol isn’t involved, a warm stupor is sure to pervade one’s senses.

Serving smoothies, juices and thick shakes, the Hyderabad-based chain has its presence in Bangalore, Chennai, Pune, New Delhi, Indore and Vijaywada. Its first Kolkata outlet near Minto Park is resplendent with natural light while the wooden furniture, board games, a guitar and the quirky murals add to the overall informal ambience.  Coming to the menu, the first word that comes to mind is extensive — it is sure to spoil one silly what with more than 180 options! From super thick smoothies to chilled juices, thick shakes to protein smoothies, indulging in a variety of fruits from dragon fruits to figs and avocados, Drunken Monkey has a blend for every palette. And lest one forget, the primary draw is that the place doesn’t use artificial sugar, preservatives or ice.

Categorised into different sections, the menu offers a few startling items. One has got to be Sexy Spinach — a mocktail of beetroot, spinach, carrots, cucumber and apples. Veggies never tasted so good! For the caffeine addicts, the prime movers are fusions like coffee and caramel, Irish cream and Nutella magic.

There’s also a range of detox choices for the health-conscious lot. Another unique offering is the “meal in a bottle” that incorporates things like muesli, cornflakes, super fibre and dry fruits. Special mention has to be made of the Monkey Confidential drinks as the ingredients are kept a surprise. For the winter months, Drunken Monkey has introduced a “Hot Menu” apart from a few vegetarian food dishes.

They say the Monkey has an Iron Commandment — only the freshest fruits and vegetables find their way into the drinks. And if the name doesn’t trigger a smile, the blends at Drunken Monkey (On Juice!) certainly will.
