Two bouncers were shot dead and another was seriously injured near Kolkata Police commissioner’s residence at Shakespeare Sarani around 4.45 a.m. today when they went to take possession of a “disputed” plot.
Around 16 bouncers, including four women and a photographer headed by a lawyer “trespassed” into the plot at 9A Short Street in the Shakespeare Sarani police station area, police said. The plot is at a stone&’s throw from the commissioner’s residence, DC (South) office, Shakespeare Sarani and Park Street police stations.
Ms Mamata Agarwal, who runs a play school in the “disputed” plot, opened fire realising that some men had intruded in the premises, police said. Ms Agarwal&’s associates Pramod Shaw and Shafik Ahmed alias Pappu also fired indiscriminately killing two ~ Piklu Acharya and Prosenjit Dey. A bouncer, Kaushik Adhya, was injured.
Mr Pallav Kanti Ghosh, joint commissioner of police (crime), said eight of the 16 bouncers, who were hired from security agency Active Group, owned by Arup Debnath from Baruipur in South 24-Parganas, scaled the boundary wall after allegedly being instructed by the lawyer Partha Chatterjee and opened the gate helping others enter the premises.
A police officer said camera footage showed Ms Agarwal coming out of her room with a single barrel gun and firing indiscriminately. Some of the bouncers managed to flee, but three of them entered a small room of the play school. By that time Shafik, a goon from Golabari in Howrah, who had been staying in the premises for the past few months, joined Ms Agarwal and started firing at the bouncers from a double barrel gun. He also exchanged his gun with Ms Agarwal. Pramod, who was staying in the disputed building, got allegedly involved in the incident.
Police officers, who were on-duty at the DC (South) office, on hearing the gunshot, informed Shakespeare Sarani PS. Policemen went to the spot and found three persons in a pool of blood in the play school’s room. They took them to SSKM Hospital, where two were declared brought dead while the injured person was admitted. Ms Agarwal, Shafik and Pramod were arrested on charges of murder and two other Sections of the Arms Act. Nine others, including the lawyer, were also arrested on charges of trespassing. Before being arrested, Ms Agarwal claimed the bouncers molested her and her associates opened fire using licensed guns of her landlord to save her.  Police are probing if there was any counter firing by the security guards. Two arms with seven empty and two live cartridges were seized.  The owner of the security agency will be questioned and some names cropped up during interrogation, said the Jt CP. Five are absconding.
