Bangalore, 14 November: Seven passengers, including a child, aboard a Mumbai-bound Volvo bus were burnt to death and another 37 injured after the driver hit the railing of a railway bridge at high speed in Haveri district, about 300 km from the IT city.
The mishap involving the vehicle, run by a private tour operator, occurred in the wee hours of the morning with the bus catching fire on impact, as per available information. Five of the injured who are in a critical condition have been rushed to a hospital in Hubli, a few km from the accident site. This is the second such accident in recent days. 0n 30 October, a private operator’s Volvo bus, which was plying between Bangalore and Hyderabad, caught fire in Mehboobnagar, leading to the deaths of 45 passengers. In that case, the fuel tank of the vehicle burst after it had hit a divider.
A majority of the survivors of this morning’s nightmare managed to escape after breaking open the glass windows of the newly-acquired Volvo. According to Mr Sameer and Ismail, two of the survivors, the passengers just grabbed the hammer that was near the exit and smashed the windows on the left and right side of the bus, if only to jump out in sheer panic. All this in a matter of five to 10 minutes with the flames spreading fast in the interior of the bus, they told reporters in Haveri.
Most of the injuries to the survivors, including women and the elderly, were on account of the hurried jump they had to execute ,in the process landing uncomfortably on the road. The seven who died in the accident could not escape and were burnt alive. The police hopes to establish their identities after appropriate DNA tests.
