YSR Congress MPs meet Kovind seeking special status for Andhra

A delegation of parliamentarians of the YSR Congress on Tuesday met President Ram Nath Kovind, seeking his intervention to ensure that Andhra Pradesh gets special category status.

The MPs submitted a letter to Kovind, written by party Chief Jagan Mohan Reddy, urging him to mediate as the Central government continues to stick to its stand of not granting special status to the state.

In a tweet, Kovind said: “A delegation of MPs from YSR Congress Party led by Shri M. Rajamohan Reddy called on #PresidentKovind at Rashtrapati Bhavan.”

The request comes a day after normal life came to a standstill in Andhra Pradesh on Monday as the day-long shutdown called in demand for the special status category to the state evoked near total response.

The shutdown was called by Pratyeka Hoda Sadhana Samithi (The people’s forum to fight for special status) and was being backed by the YSR Congress party, the Left parties, Congress and Jana Sena.

Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu will observe a day-long fast on April 20 to protest against the Narendra Modi-led government.

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) President will be staging the protest on his 68th birthday to pressurise the Central government to fulfill all commitments made at the time of bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014.
