In a shocking incident, a 22-year-old man allegedly attempted suicide by slitting his throat inside a police station where he was brought in connection with a theft case on Thursday, officials said.

The incident was reported at Manikpur police station following which Station House Officer (SHO) Deep Narayan was suspended, they said.

The injured victim has been referred to AIIMS Raebareli for advanced treatment.

According to reports, Shivam Singh (22), son of Nagendra Singh, a resident of Jamethi village under Kunda police circle, had been missing since October 17. His family had been searching for him for the past several days. They later came to know that Shivam had been held at Manikpur police station for questioning for the last five days.

On Thursday around 11 am, the family received information that Shivam had attempted suicide inside the police station by slitting his throat with a sharp object. When his family rushed to the station in panic, police informed them that Shivam had been shifted to Raebareli for treatment.

Shivam’s mother, Savitri Devi, had also visited the police station earlier that day after hearing about her son’s presence there. She tried to get information from police personnel but was reportedly not given clear details at that time. Disappointed and worried, she returned home, only to later learn about the incident.

Taking serious note of the matter, Superintendent of Police (SP) Deepak Bhuker suspended SHO Deep Narayan and ordered a detailed investigation. The inquiry has been handed over to Circle Officer (CO) Kunda, Amarnath Gupta.

The SP stated that the investigation will focus on how such an incident occurred inside the police station, whether proper procedures were followed during the questioning, and why the youth had been kept there for several days.
