A day after the Modi government announced the ‘Agnipath’ scheme with the recruitment of 46000 Agniveers, hundreds of youths on Wednesday held a massive demonstration protesting against the new scheme by putting barricades on the Delhi-Ajmer highway for couple of hours.

Youths, mostly aspirants of defense services, jammed the highway on about 2 km disrupting traffic movements, and shouted anti-Agnipath scheme under Kalwar area around 3 pm, a senior cop of Kardhani police station said when contacted.

Demanding rollback of the scheme, a group of protesters told TV media, “The Modi government played with the future of young guys waiting for jobs in the army. For years, the dreams of youths preparing for army recruitment on a routine basis have been shelved, and they were created. This scheme will not only harm the youth but may also breach the secrecy and credibility of the Army. In such a situation, the central government should stop this scheme and start the recruitment process as before”.

Meanwhile, Hanuman Beniwal, Rajasthan’s RLP MP which was once an alliance partner of NDA, criticised the decision of contract recruitment for four years through the Agnipath scheme saying that his party would hold the state-wide protest in all 33 districts tomorrow and submit a memorandum to the collectors. No such process was in the interest of the country and such decisions are not in the interest of the army either, and two years relaxation in age limit be given to the youths waiting for armed jobs, he demanded.
