‘Won’t tolerate a Khan in Mumbai’: BJP leader’s warning after Zohran Mamdani’s New York victory

With civic elections in the city around the corner, Mumbai BJP president Ameet Satam on Wednesday sounded an alarm-bell — apparently referring to Zohran Mamdani’s victory in the New York mayoral polls and warning against the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA)’s alleged ‘vote jihad’.

Without directly referring to Mamdani, Satam said that seeing the surnames of some mayors and witnessing the MVA’s alleged vote jihad, it is necessary to stay cautious.

“Just as the colour of some international cities is changing, after seeing the surnames of some mayors and witnessing the Maha Vikas Aghadi’s vote jihad, it seems necessary to stay cautious in the context of Mumbai..!” he wrote in a post on X.

The BJP leader further warned that “if someone tries to impose a ‘Khan’ on Mumbai, it will not be tolerated! Wake up, Mumbaikars!”

For the unversed, Mamdani, a staunch critic of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s politics, is an Indian-origin Democratic leader.

The 34-year-old is the son of Indian-origin political commentator Mahmood Mamdani and acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair. He defeated former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo to become the first Muslim and the youngest mayor of New York.

In his victory speech, Mamdani quoted Jawaharlal Nehru while the popular Bollywood song ‘Dhoom Machale’ played in the background.
