The Supreme Court on Wednesday sought a report from the Secretary-General for delaying a letter by the Unnao rape survivor dated July 12 two weeks before the accident.

Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi has directed the Secretary-General to go through the letter written in Hindi for preparing a note of it for his perusal and submit a report within a week.

The matter will be taken up for hearing on Thursday.

Family members of the Unnao rape victim, in a letter to Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi on July 12 had stated that the kin of accused threatened them to settle case otherwise they would be implicated in false cases.

The letter further urged the CJI to take action against those making threats.

The victim’s mother, sister and aunt alleged they were being constantly threatened by the men of the accused Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar.

“Accused Shashi Singh’s son Naveen Singh, Kuldeep’s brother Manoj Singh and Kunnu Mishra along with two others visited the victim’s house on July 7,” the letter read.

The victim’s family stated that the men told them that they had bribed the judge and secured the bail for Shashi Singh and Kuldeep Singh.

The letter also said on July 8, Shashi Singh’s husband Haripal Singh came to the victim’s house and again threatened them. They also attached a photograph of Haripal Singh marking his presence at their residence and visual of a car to support their complaint.

The CJI said the court “will try to do something constructive in this destructive atmosphere”.

On Sunday, the woman from Unnao, who had accused BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar of raping her in 2017, was severely injured while two of her aunts were killed after their car collided with a truck near Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh.

The family of the rape survivor has demanded immediate action against the BJP MLA claiming that the accident was a “conspiracy” to “eliminate the family”.

An FIR has been registered against Sengar, his brother Manoj Sengar and eight others in the accident case. The FIR has been registered on basis of the complaint given by the rape survivor’s uncle Mahesh Singh, who is lodged in Rae Bareli jail.

Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh government has sent a formal request to the Government of India to transfer the Unnao rape survivor’s road accident case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The Unnao rape case hit the headlines in 2017 after the then 16-year-old girl alleged that she was raped by BJP MLA Sengar.

Sengar has been in jail since the past several months while the case is being probed by the CBI. Sengar’s brother has also been accused of beating up the victim’s father after tying him to a tree. Her father was then arrested and later died in police custody.

Meanwhile, Congress, BSP and SP have demanded justice for the rape survivor and strict action against the accused.
