It has been more than a year since Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump met. Many occasions came, but none materialised, for one or the other reason.
The last 12 months have tested ties between the two partners, with the US imposition of tariffs on India sending ties to a historic low before being ‘rescued’ by the recent interim trade deal.
The US envoy to India, Sergio Gor, has now said, “Stay tuned”, when asked about a possible Modi-Trump meeting.
He was asked by news agency ANI on the sidelines of the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi about a possible meeting of the two leaders.
“Stay tuned, I am sure it will happen at the right moment,” is what Gor is reported to have said in his response to the question.

“It has been a very impactful summit,” Gor said, adding, “We have a lot of opportunities between our two nations. We look forward to engaging with that.”
It may be recalled that ‘stay tuned’ were the two key words which the US envoy had posted on X after PM Modi and President Trump spoke over the phone earlier this month, on February 2.
Trump shortly afterwards posted on Truth Social about reaching a deal with Modi under which the US tariffs on India would be lowered to 18 per cent from 50 per cent.
Meanwhile, speaking about a potential visit of the US President to India, Gor today said PM Modi has invited him, but there is no date yet on the table.
“In terms of the President’s visit, the Prime Minister invited him. I don’t have any announcements for you soon. The president loved his visit to India. When he nominated me to be ambassador here, one thing he said is the vibrancy, the colour, the history and the culture that you’re gonna see in India is unmatched, and so I’m sure he will be back here at some point,” the envoy told the media at the AI Summit.
