Vowing to not let Congress retain in power in Meghalaya, the BJP on Saturday said party leader Himanta Biswa Sarma will be dispatched to the state to ensure that a “non-Congress government is formed there”.

Addressing the media in Agartala, Tripura, General Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Ram Madhav said: “In Meghalaya a divided result is a possibility, we will see that a non-Congress government is formed there.”

“Himanta Biswa Sarma ji (deputy Chief Minister of Assam) is leaving for Meghalaya shortly,” he added.

The BJP Parliamentary Party is expected to meet in the evening in Delhi to devise its strategy on forming the governments in the three northeast states.

According to trends, of the total 60 seats in Meghalaya, the Congress was ahead on 25 seats while the NPP was leading on 12 seats followed by the BJP with 8 seats.

However, the NPP is an ally of the NDA government at the Centre and therefore, a BJP-NPP alliance can be a possibility.

In all probability, Meghalaya is likely to see a hung assembly with independent candidates leading on as many as 15 seats and the BJP will be anxious to not let the Congress return to power.
