A mob in Nadia district’s Nischintapur area allegedly lynched a couple on Saturday after the body of a young boy was recovered from a pond. Police said the crowd suspected the couple’s involvement in the child’s death.

The body of a child was discovered in Nischintapur area in West Bengal’s Nadia district on Saturday morning. After the body was found, tension was triggered in the locality, after which the mob assaulted two locals and killed them for allegedly being involved in the minor’s death, police said.

The mob also allegedly destroyed the property of the two neighbours of the child’s family, claiming that they killed the child.

The boy, who was missing since Friday afternoon, was recovered from the nearby waterbody this morning, he said.

“The body of the boy was wrapped in a tarpaulin. The family members of the deceased minor accused a local of murdering the child. A mob, including the family members of the boy, stormed the accused’s house, vandalised the property, and assaulted two persons there,” a senior police officer told a news agency.

The two injured were rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared them dead, he added.

Several teams of police have to be deployed to bring the mob under control, who alleged that the neighbour couple killed the child. He further added that several residents were involved for allegedly lynching the couple.

“The situation is under control at the moment. We have not arrested anyone, but launched an investigation into the matter,” he stated.
