Ahead of the high-stakes West Bengal Assembly Elections Phase 2 polling, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) officers have been deployed in hyper-sensitive regions to prevent crude bomb threats.
Following the recovery of 79 crude bombs and other incriminating materials in West Bengal, the Election Commission of India has directed the deployment of NIA sleuths to prevent the use of crude bombs to disrupt the polling.
The NIA officers will be stationed in plain clothes in areas marked as hyper-sensitive based on the records of the 2021 Assembly elections in the state.
Earlier on Monday, the NIA took over the investigation into the alleged recovery of 79 crude bombs and other incriminating materials in West Bengal ahead of crucial phase two polls.
The alleged recovery of a large number of crude bombs by the Kolkata Police has posed a serious threat to human life and property.
It is being suspected that the crude bombs were being stored to dirupt polling process.
After taking over the probe, the anti-terror agency re-registered an earlier FIR dated April 25, 2026, of Uttarkashi Police Station under Bhangar division of Kolkata Police.
The second phase of the West Bengal Assembly polls will be conducted across 142 constituencies under unprecedented security cover.
In order to ensure smooth polling, 2,407 companies of central forces, including Central Armed Police Forces, the India Reserve Battalion, and personnel from armed police wings of other states, in addition to personnel from West Bengal Police and Kolkata Police have been deployed across all the 142 assembly constituencies.
