Carelessness during weather shifts can take a toll on children’s health, while inappropriate eating habits and poor hygiene are contributing to an increase in cases of diarrhoea and pneumonia among children.

The Uttar Pradesh Health Department has appealed to parents to immediately seek medical attention and treatment at the nearest government health centre if their children show symptoms of these diseases.

Dr Milind Vardhan, General Manager of the National Health Mission, stated here on Thursday that changing weather compromises the immunity of young children, increasing the risk of diarrhoea and pneumonia.

He stated that ORS and zinc supplements are available free of charge at all government hospitals and health centres in the state. Adequate arrangements have also been made for children’s medical tests and treatment.

He explained that if parents identify early symptoms and immediately contact an ASHA, ANM, or the nearest health unit, their child can be prevented from developing a serious condition. With the timely administration of ORS solution, zinc tablets, and necessary medications, most children recover quickly.

According to health experts, approximately 15 to 20 per cent of deaths in children under five years of age are related to diarrhoea and pneumonia. Successful treatment of more than 90 per cent of diarrhoea cases is possible with ORS and zinc, while early detection of pneumonia can significantly prevent serious complications.

Dr Milind Vardhan advised that if a child develops diarrhoea, immediately start giving ORS solution and contact a health worker to ensure zinc tablets are given for 14 days. Breastfeed the child frequently and provide adequate fluids. If symptoms of pneumonia appear, it is important to seek medical attention without delay.
