Congress president Rahul Gandhi, who is on a maiden visit to Kerala’s Wayanad constituency as an MP, on Saturday held a roadshow in Kalpetta. But what can be described as serendipity, Rahul met someone who had been there at the Holy Cross Hospital in Delhi where he was born on June 19, 1970.

On Sunday morning, Rahul Gandhi met Rajamma, his delivery nurse at the Holy Cross Hospital when he was born. It was an emotional reunion after a gap of almost 49 years as Rahul Gandhi hugged Rajamma. Rajamma told Rahul that it was neither Rajiv Gandhi (his father) nor Sonia Gandhi (his mother), but she who first cuddled him. Hearing this, an emotional Rahul hugged her again.

Rajamma met Gandhi earlier on Sunday where the Congress President had put up for the night in Wayanad. The moment was captured and Leader of Opposition Ramesh Chennithala posted the picture on Facebook. Chennithala is accompanying Gandhi in his constituency on the roadshows which entered the third day on Sunday.

The Facebook post said Rajamma was a nurse at the Holy Cross hospital in Delhi where Gandhi was born.

Rajamma, after her retirement, is now settled in Gandhi’s constituency Wayanad. Rajamma had expressed her desire to various Congress leaders that she would like to meet him. Her desire was fulfilled on Sunday.

Gandhi, who won from Wayanad constituency by a record margin, also expressed his intention of building a “better Wayanad”.

He landed at Kozhikode airport on Friday before arriving in Wayanad parliamentary constituency to a massive public reception, kick-starting his three-day visit to the state.

Moving around in a convoy of over 100 vehicles, Gandhi, accompanied by senior party leaders, was in an open vehicle and despite heavy rain, thousands of people waited cheerfully to see him.

This is Gandhi’s first political outing after the party’s drubbing in the general elections.
