A part of the Shahpura railway overbridge on National Highway-45 collapsed on Sunday evening at around 5 pm, creating panic among commuters on the Jabalpur–Bhopal road.

The portion that fell was under repair and not open for traffic. The other side of the bridge was being used by vehicles at the time. Locals said they heard a loud sound before the structure gave way, after which dust spread across the road and traffic came to a sudden halt.

Police teams and district officials reached the spot within minutes and stopped movement on the stretch as a precaution. Vehicles were later diverted through nearby routes to avoid long queues.

According to officials, no one was hurt in the incident as no vehicle was passing over the damaged portion when it collapsed. This helped prevent what could have turned into a serious accident during the evening rush hour.

Engineers from the road development department have started checking the bridge to find out what went wrong. Since the bridge was still under the contractor’s maintenance period, responsibility for repairs will be fixed after the inspection.

Residents in nearby areas said they have been worried about the condition of the bridge for some time and had noticed cracks during recent repair work. The sudden collapse has once again brought attention to the condition of public infrastructure on busy highways.

Authorities said repair work will begin after a safety review and traffic will continue to move through diversions until the bridge is declared fit for use.
