The Banaras Hindu University (BHU) campus witnessed heavy stone-pelting between students and security personnel after a heated confrontation between students and the university’s Proctorial Board.

The campus briefly resembled a battlefield. Several flower pots, vehicles, and chairs were damaged in the vandalism late on Tuesday night. Upon receiving information, police from several police stations and the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control after considerable effort.

The incident began near the Rajaram hostel, where a vehicle allegedly hit a female student. Security personnel engaged in an argument with students who had come to complain.

Meanwhile, Proctorial Board officials say some students were already arguing with another boy. When they were stopped, they confronted the security personnel. A large number of students quickly gathered and staged a sit-in protest outside the Vice Chancellor’s residence.

As the dispute escalated, students began vandalising decorative flowerpots and other items near the LD Guest House. Some students were reportedly injured in the prolonged stone pelting.

The BHU administration has stated that it will examine CCTV footage on campus. Assistant Police Commissioner Gaurav Kumar stated here on Wednesday that the situation is currently under control. Neither party has filed a written complaint yet.

It is noteworthy that the events of ‘Kashi Tamil Sangamam 4.0’ are beginning today on the BHU campus.

After the gang rape of an IIT-BHU student last year, security on campus has been tightened. Multiple barriers have been put up.
