Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay, who met Governor Rajendra Arlekar at the Lok Bhavan today, is unlikely to take oath tomorrow as the actor-politician has reportedly not been able to secure enough support to cross the majority mark.
According to a report by news agency ANI, Vijay’s TVK does not have the required numbers to form a government and the Governor is also not convinced about the official figures for now.
TVK made a blockbuster debut in Tamil Nadu Assembly elections 2026, winning 108 seats in the 234-member house. However, his party could not secure the majority mark of 118 seats, leaving it at the mercy of smaller allies, given his public stand against allying with the DMK or the AIADMK, which is part of the BJP-led NDA.
So far, only the Congress party, which has five MLAs, has handed over a Letter of Support to the TVK, but the party still needs at least 6 more MLAs.
Vijay had contested from two constituencies and will have to resign from one of them, leaving TVK’s effective strength in the Assembly at 107.
The Congress had contested the election as part of the DMK-led alliance but has decided to extend support to TVK.
Earlier today, Congress MLAs, led by the party’s Tamil Nadu incharge Girish Chodankar, met TVK Chief Vijay in Chennai and handed over their letter of support to him.
The Congress has formally offered full support to Vijay’s party but not without a condition. The party has told TVK that no “communal forces” will be part of the alliance.
The Congress has also stated that its alliance with the TVK is “not only for the formation of this government, but also for future elections to the local body organisations, the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.”
Some reports suggested that TVK has offered the Congress party two cabinet berths in the new government.
