‘Victimhood card, work from jail?’ BJP slams Opposition over Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill

‘Congress abusing PM once again’: BJP hits out at party after Telangana CM compared PM Modi to demon ‘Marich’ over women’s quota push

BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala on Monday strongly backed the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025, lashing out at the Opposition and branding Congress as “shameless” for resisting it.

In a press conference at the party headquarters here, Poonawala said, “The nation has embraced morality and good governance, but the opposition parties are choosing shamelessness. They are not guided by principles in politics, but by family and power, no matter how tainted their families may be.”

Mocking the opposition, he stated, “If a song were to be written for the opposition, its essence would be: “Bhrashtachar mere parivaar ka shishtachar, bhrashtachar hi mera janmasiddh adhikar aur koi karyawahi kare to main chillaoon atyachar aur khelun victimhood card, yahi mera gaana hai, main hoon bhrashtachar ka sabse param yaar (Corruption is the etiquette of my family, corruption is my public right and if anyone takes any action then I will shout, torture and play the victimhood card, this is my song, I am the ultimate friend of corruption).”

Training guns at the Aam Aadmi Party, he stated that “those who once spoke of sending others to Tihar ended up running a government together with them from Tihar itself.”

He claimed, “Arvind Kejriwal holds the unique record of running a government from Tihar for 150 days. The ones who claimed they would change politics have themselves completely changed.”

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the nation adapted to “work from home.” But are we now expected to accept “work from jail”? How can a Chief Minister run a government from inside a prison—chairing cabinet meetings, addressing the public, or taking emergency calls? He said. How would sensitive files remain secure, and public access be guaranteed? Such an arrangement is neither feasible nor ethical, he stated.

He added, ”In his recent interview, the Home Minister underlined that the Prime Minister does not place himself above the law. He stressed that even the PM is accountable to the system, and that this very accountability is the true strength of India’s democracy.”

”Contrast this with Indira Gandhi, who, 50 years ago, altered the Constitution after being convicted of electoral malpractice, shielding herself from judicial scrutiny. The Modi government, on the other hand, has taken the position that if the prime minister himself faces serious charges and spends 30 days in custody, he too must resign,” he further stated. This, they argue, highlights the clear difference between what they call Congress’ “shamelessness” and Modi’s commitment to integrity, he said.

He alleged, “The hypocrisy of Congress and AAP is at its peak. Congress accuses the ED of targeting, but when the same agency takes action against Kejriwal and even the Supreme Court grants no relief, AAP proudly puts up posters on the streets claiming, “This case was initiated by us.”

He slammed Rahul Gandhi and said, “Today, the opposition is fighting not to save democracy but to protect corruption. Rahul Gandhi is the same person who, in 2013, tore up the ordinance and projected himself as the highest moral authority, while now calling the 30-day jail provision unconstitutional. The question is—was he lying then, or is he lying now? Does he want cabinet meetings to be held from jail?”

“Arvind Kejriwal spoke about Lokpal and accountability, but today in Punjab, the Lokpal is missing. Earlier, he demanded that ministers resign without even an FIR, but why is he silent now? The real agenda of the opposition is not democracy, but saving corruption,” he stated.

Earlier today, Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed confidence that the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025, will be passed, despite the opposition’s fierce criticism.

The bill proposes the automatic removal of the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, and Ministers if they are arrested and detained for 30 consecutive days on charges punishable by five years or more imprisonment.

The bill has been referred to a JPC for detailed scrutiny, comprising 31 members from both houses of Parliament. The committee will examine the bill and provide recommendations before it is put to a vote.

Speaking to ANI, Amit Shah defended the bill, stating it’s aimed at upholding “constitutional morality” and public trust, emphasising that the bill would apply equally to all leaders, including those from the ruling party.
