The election for the Vice President of India will take place on September 9 between 10 AM and 5 PM, the Election Commission of India said in a press note on Friday.
The counting, if required, will also take place on the same day after the voting concludes at 5 PM, the poll panel said.
The issue of the Election Commission’s notification will be on August 7, and the last date for filing of nominations has been fixed for August 21. Scrutiny will take place on August 22, and the last date of withdrawal from candidature will be August 25.
The ECI has already completed the preparation of the Electoral College list for the 2025 Vice-Presidential Election. This development comes after Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation on July 21, paving the way for a new election.
As per a poll panel notification, ”the electoral college comprises elected members of the Rajya Sabha, nominated members of the Rajya Sabha, and elected members of the Lok Sabha, totaling 788 MPs (588 in Lok Sabha and 245 in Rajya Sabha)”.
The Vice-President is elected through a proportional representation system using a single transferable vote, with voting done by secret ballot. Each MP ranks candidates in order of preference.
The poll panel said that the list has been finalised and arranged alphabetically based on the State/Union Territory of the respective Houses. The list will be available for purchase at the Election Commission of India from the date of notification.
Also that the election to the post of Vice President of India must be held within 60 days of a vacancy, which in this case had emerged on July 21 following Dhankhar’s sudden resignation, citing medical reasons.
