A woman lost her life due to a traffic jam on the Rishikesh-Badrinath highway where the work on the ambitious all-weather road connecting Hindu pilgrimage centers in Uttarakhand is presently going on at war footing.

The wife of a Nepali worker was referred to a higher medical centre on Sunday evening due to excess bleeding after pregnancy operation. The ambulance in which the patient was being moved got stuck in a traffic jam for about two-and-a-half hour jam, first near Totaghati and second time at Shivpuri.

The condition of the woman deteriorated and when the ambulance finally reached the government hospital in Rishikesh, the doctors declared the patient ‘brought dead’. The woman was admitted to the base hospital in Srinagar (Garhwal) for labour pain. She gave birth to a girl child on Sunday afternoon but after that, her health began to decline due to excessive bleeding.

Chaya Bhandari was moved from Srinagar (Garhwal) to the higher medical centre in Rishikesh. Due to vacation tourist rush, the ambulance got stuck for about one hour at the Shivpuri, famous for rafting activities. Earlier, they had got stuck at in a traffic jam near Totaghati for about two-and-a-half hours. Due to the all-weather road construction work, the traffic is stopped occasionally for clearing debris and moving machines.

Due to the delay, the patient finally reached Rishikesh around 11 pm on Sunday.

The case also exposes the weak medical system in the hills. As Jona Bhandari, husband of the deceased lady says, “I first admitted my wife in Chamoli and moved her to Ruderprayag hospital. Due to the scarcity of doctors in Ruderprayag hospital I had to take her to Srinagar base hospital and finally to Rishikesh. I made all the effort, but my luck was bad.”
