A day after schools in Uttarakhand began teaching verses from the Bhagavad Gita, the Government SC-ST Teachers’ Association of the state has opposed the move, calling it unconstitutional.
The association argued that the Bhagavad Gita is a religious text and cannot be taught in state-funded schools as it violates the principle of secularism.
Opposing the inclusion of Bhagavad Gita verses in the morning assembly prayer, the Uttarakhand Government SC/ST Teachers’ Association has written to the Director of School Education demanding the withdrawal of the order issued by the directorate.
The association’s letter stated that the Bhagavad Gita is a religious scripture, and according to the Constitution, religious instruction cannot be imparted in government-funded educational institutions.
Sanjay Kumar Tamta, President of the Teachers’ Association, stated in the letter: “Article 28(1) of the Indian Constitution clearly states that no religious instruction shall be provided in any educational institution wholly or partially funded by the state. This provision upholds the secular character of the Constitution and ensures equal respect for all religions.”
Referring to the government directive mandating the teaching of Gita verses in schools, the association’s letter further said: “The directive to include Gita verses in morning assembly prayers violates constitutional provisions. It undermines the secular foundation of government schools, which cater to students from diverse religious, caste, and community backgrounds. Imposing verses from a single religious text could lead to discomfort, exclusion, and discrimination among students from other faiths. It also contradicts the principles of social harmony and inclusive education.”
The letter concluded with a firm objection: “The SC-ST Teachers’ Association strongly opposes this directive and demands its immediate withdrawal. Education must promote a scientific temper and inclusive values, not propagate any particular religious belief.”
Notably, the Directorate of the Uttarakhand School Education Department had recently issued an order to all Chief Education Officers to ensure the inclusion of Bhagavad Gita verses in morning assemblies starting July 15. While many schools have complied, the SC-ST Teachers’ Association has now formally raised its objection.
