Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath spoke for the first time on the alleged rape of an 18-year-old girl in Unnao allegedly by a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Kuldeep Sengar.

Addressing reporters on Friday, Adityanath said that his government will not compromise on the case irrespective of the position of the accused.

“Our government will not compromise on this,” he said, adding, “The accused will not be spared no matter how influential he is.”

Stating that his government has adopted a ‘zero tolerance’ policy against criminals since the first day of holding office, Adityanath said that the CBI is probing the case which was handed over to it following an order by the state government.

“We immediately formed an SIT to probe the case as soon as the matter came to our notice,” he informed reporters.

The CM’s comments came five days after the victim tried to immolate herself in front of the CM’s residence demanding justice. Her father was arrested and later died in custody.

On Friday, the CBI detained Sengar in connection with the case.

An FIR was registered against Sengar in Makhi police station on Thursday. He was charged under sections 363 (kidnapping), 366 (abduction of woman), 376 (rape), 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The case was later handed over to the CBI. The elite probe agency has filed three separate cases into the alleged rape and incidents following it. The state government also ordered the handing over of the twin cases of rape and the custodial death of the victim’s father to the CBI.

Sengar, who won the Bangarmau assembly seat in the 2017 Uttar Pradesh elections, has been claiming innocence even as the state government came under fire for not acting against the political strongman in spite of repeated accusations.

Reacting to allegations that the MLA is being defended, UP DGP OP Singh said, “Nobody is defending honourable MLA. All we are saying is that we have to hear both sides.”
