The Uttar Pradesh government has taken another step toward inclusive cultural development by approving tourism infrastructure works at Shri Digambar Jain Temple in Indira Nagar, Lucknow.

The project, cleared under the Chief Minister’s Tourism Development Scheme with an allocation of Rs one crore, aims to elevate the experience of thousands of devotees who visit this important Jain faith centre. Officials said the initiative reflects the state’s continued commitment to strengthening facilities around religious sites of every community.

Shri Digambar Jain Temple has long been a familiar spiritual anchor for Jain families living in and around the state capital. Over the years, it has grown into a vibrant space of daily worship, community rituals and cultural unity. Its importance is further echoed across the city through the revered Jain temples of Daliganj, Chowk and Ashiyana, which draw large congregations during festivals.

The Ashiyana temple is known for its nearly thousand-year-old idol of Bhagwan Mahavir, while the Indira Nagar shrine houses an approximately 800-year-old handwritten Jain manuscript that continues to fascinate visitors.

With modernisation now underway, the temple precinct will be redesigned to offer a safer and more comfortable environment for devotees. The approved works include improved lighting, enhanced sanitation, drinking water facilities, clear signage, comfortable seating areas, parking arrangements and a dedicated information point. Officials said the aim is to ensure that both local worshippers and visitors from outside the city experience the shrine with ease and dignity.

UP Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh said that the Jain community has played a meaningful role in shaping Uttar Pradesh’s social and cultural ethos. Upgrading the Indira Nagar temple, he added, reflects the Yogi Adityanath government’s respect for this contribution and its belief in inclusive development. The minister also highlighted that the government is working on plans to strengthen key locations within the Jain Circuit, one of the 12 tourism circuits of Uttar Pradesh.

The enhancements planned at Shri Digambar Jain Temple are expected to enrich Lucknow’s cultural fabric while boosting the city’s tourism ecosystem. Officials said the project will support local employment, encourage small businesses nearby and offer visitors a more complete experience of the city’s diverse spiritual heritage.

As Lucknow continues to broaden its cultural footprint, the redevelopment of this temple stands as a thoughtful step that honours faith while advancing the city’s tourism landscape.
