The Uttar Pradesh State Human Rights Commission has taken cognisance of allegations raised in a complaint filed by Dr Gajendra Singh Yadav regarding alleged misbehaviour with the disciples of Shankaracharya Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati during Mauni Amavasya at the Magh Mela in Prayagraj.
The Commission disposed of the complaint with specific instructions. In a statement issued on Saturday, it said that considering the nature of the allegations, it would be appropriate to forward a copy of the complaint to the Police Commissioner, Prayagraj, for examination.
The Commission has directed the Prayagraj Police Commissioner to take necessary action in accordance with the law. It clarified that no opinion has been expressed on the merits of the complaint.
Dr Gajendra Singh Yadav, an advocate at the Allahabad High Court, had approached the State Human Rights Commission alleging misbehaviour by police personnel with the disciples of Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati on January 18, Mauni Amavasya, during the Magh Mela.
Terming the matter serious, he sought the Commission’s intervention. The complaint alleges instances of misbehaviour, assault, and jostling by the Mela administration and police personnel.
