Karikot village in Bahraich district has been conferred the ‘ICRT Indian Subcontinent Responsible Tourism Award 2025’ in the Peace, Understanding and Inclusivity category at BLTM 2025 in New Delhi, affirming Uttar Pradesh’s rise as a leader in community centred rural tourism.

Presented by Uttarakhand Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj, the award was received on behalf of Karikot by Bahraich CDO Mukesh Chandra, Village Stary Sushil Kumar Singh and Gram Pradhan Parvati. The ICRT judges’ panel was led by Prof. Harold Goodwin with Manisha Pande and Charmarie Maelge, among others, who recognised Karikot’s community driven model for building harmony and livelihoods in a sensitive border landscape.

Set beside the Katarniaghat landscape near the confluence of the Gerua and Kauriala rivers, Karikot has developed homestays, culture rich walks, local cuisine experiences and women led turmeric value chains that welcome visitors while strengthening household incomes and social cohesion.

UP Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh, speaking about the achievement, said, “Karikot has brought immense pride to Uttar Pradesh. This recognition places our villages on the global map of responsible tourism. The example set by Karikot proves that rural tourism can be both a custodian of heritage and a pathway to prosperity. We see this award as encouragement for other villages across the state to follow the same model.”

Gram Pradhan Parvati said, “On behalf of the people of Karikot, we thank Uttar Pradesh Tourism for steady guidance. This award has given our village a new identity and confidence. We will keep welcoming guests with warmth so they can experience our rivers, forests, food and traditions.”

The awards ceremony took place at Yashobhoomi, India International Convention and Expo Centre, Dwarka.
