The Uttar Pradesh government has taken a major decision prioritising the safety, health and quality education of children.

In view of the increasing heatwave conditions across the state, the summer vacation period for schools run by and recognised by the Basic Education Council has been extended until June 24.

According to an order issued by Additional Chief Secretary, Basic Education and Secondary Education Department, Partha Sarathi Sen Sharma, summer vacation will now be observed from May 20 to June 24 every year, and regular classes will resume on June 25. The state government aims to ensure a smooth and orderly start to the new academic session while protecting children from extreme heat.

The government has taken this decision based on the experiences of previous years, when district magistrates had to repeatedly extend holidays at the local level due to heatwave conditions. The new system will ensure uniformity across the state and provide a clear academic calendar for students, parents and teachers.

The government has also ensured that all necessary preparations are completed before schools reopen. Accordingly, all teachers, Shiksha Mitras, instructors and non-teaching staff will be required to attend schools on June 22, 23 and 24.

During this period, schools will undertake tasks such as preparing lesson plans, finalising midday meal arrangements, organising textbook distribution, holding School Management Committee meetings, making preparations for the operation of Bal Vatikas, cleaning school premises, kitchens and toilets, arranging play materials, and activating smart classrooms and ICT labs.

The Additional Chief Secretary has directed that a minimum of 220 working days and regular teaching-learning activities be ensured in every academic session in accordance with the provisions of the Right to Education (RTE) Act. District Magistrates have also been instructed to keep this statutory requirement in mind before declaring holidays at the local level.

The Yogi Adityanath government believes that ensuring adequate teaching days is essential for improving learning outcomes and providing quality education to children.

The order also includes directions to ensure the availability of electricity, drinking water and other basic facilities in schools. In addition, a group yoga session will be organised annually on International Yoga Day, June 21, with the participation of teachers and students. The initiative aims to promote a healthy lifestyle, discipline and positive thinking among students.
