The Uttar Pradesh government has sent a formal request to the Government of India to transfer the Unnao rape survivor’s road accident case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
“The government has decided to refer the investigation of case crime number 305/2019 u/s 302/307/506/120 B IPC PS Gurbuxganj Distt Rae Bareli to the CBI. A formal request has been sent to Government of India in this regard,” Principal Secretary (Home) Arvind Kumar said
A woman from Unnao, who had accused BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar of raping her in 2017, was severely injured while two of her aunts were killed after their car collided with a truck near Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday.
The government move comes after the kin of the rape survivor wrote to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath seeking a CBI probe into the accident.
Earlier on Monday, Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police OP Singh said the state government was ready for a CBI probe into the accident if a request was made.
Interestingly, another major revelation in the case is that the truck involved in the accident belongs to a Samajwadi Party leader. Incidentally, the Samajwadi Party had sought a CBI probe into the accident.
Meanwhile, the family of the Unnao rape victim is sitting on a protest outside King George’s Medical University Trauma Center, where the victim is being treated.
Her family has demanded that the BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar be punished as soon as possible and that her uncle Mahesh Singh be released from jail.
An FIR has been registered against Sengar, his brother Manoj Sengar and eight others in the accident case. The FIR has been registered on basis of the complaint given by the rape survivor’s uncle Mahesh Singh, who is lodged in Rae Bareli jail.
The rape survivor and her family members were on their way to meet her uncle in jail when the collision occurred.
The police are investigating the case while treating the incident as both an accident and a conspiracy to murder.
The mother of the rape survivor has claimed a “conspiracy” by the accused BJP MLA to “to eliminate the family” as the truck that collided with the car had a number plate that was blackened.
However, the Uttar Pradesh Police has said that as per preliminary reports, the incident looked like an accident.
The owner, driver and cleaner of the truck have been arrested.
The Unnao rape case hit the headlines in 2017 after the then 16-year-old girl alleged that she was raped by BJP MLA Sengar.
Sengar has been in jail since the past several months while the case is being probed by the CBI. Sengar’s brother has also been accused of beating up the victim’s father after tying him to a tree. Her father was then arrested and later died in police custody.
One of the deceased in the Sunday accident, Pushpa Singh, was a witness in the rape case against BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar.
Meanwhile, the cremation of the two female relatives killed in Sunday’s car crash is scheduled to take place in Unnao amidst tight security on Tuesday.
