The investigation into the mysterious death of iconic Assamese singer and cultural figure Zubeen Garg has intensified, with the Special Investigation Team (SIT) zeroing in on a yacht party that may hold crucial clues to the tragedy.
On Tuesday, SIT chief and Special DGP of CID Munna Prasad Gupta confirmed that two more Assamese NRIs based in Singapore — Abhimanyu Talukdar and Tanmoy Phukan — appeared before the CID here for questioning.
According to sources, Phukan had reportedly booked the yacht where the party took place, while Talukdar, the president of the Assam Association in Singapore, had been notified about the event beforehand.
Both of them are said to be cooperating fully with investigators. Their testimonies are expected to shed light on the sequence of events aboard the yacht and any potential connection to Garg’s untimely demise.
With the appearance of Phukan and Talukdar, the total number of Assamese NRIs questioned by the SIT has risen to seven. Earlier, Rupkamal Kalita, Jalongsat Narjari, Parikshit Sharma, and Siddharth Bora had recorded their statements with the investigation team, followed by Bhaskarjyoti Dutta, who was interrogated at the CID headquarters until 2:35 pm on October 13. Three of these witnesses have also provided sworn statements before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) after their SIT questioning sessions.
SIT officials said the inquiry is progressing “in full accordance with legal procedures,” with investigators meticulously reconstructing the timeline leading up to Zubeen Garg’s final hours.
Zubeen Garg, one of Assam’s most celebrated singers and a cultural icon of the Northeast, passed away under circumstances that remain unclear, triggering an outpouring of grief across Assam and the Assamese diaspora. His death prompted widespread calls for a transparent and thorough probe, with fans and cultural organisations urging authorities to uncover the truth behind the incident.
While the SIT is yet to confirm any direct link between the yacht gathering and Garg’s death, the ongoing line of questioning indicates that investigators are pursuing all possible leads to piece together what transpired before tragedy struck.
