US President Donald Trump congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his party BJP’s landslide victory in West Bengal, White House spokesperson Kush Desai said on Tuesday.
The White House spokesperson described BJP’s bengal win as “historic and decisive”.
“The President congratulates Prime Minister Modi on this recent, historic, and decisive election victory,” White House spokesperson Kush Desai said.
Led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the BJP secured 207 seats in Bengal, reducing the ruling TMC to just 80 seats.
Others, including the Congress, Left and Humayun Kabir’s AJUP could manage just 6 seats combined.
This is the first time a BJP government will be formed in West Bengal.
After the victory, PM Modi had said that the party’s record win in the state would not have been possible without the efforts and struggles of countless BJP workers over generations.
He said that the BJP’s “politics of good governance” has triuphed.
“The lotus blooms in West Bengal! The 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections will be remembered forever. People’s power has prevailed and BJP’s politics of good governance has triumphed. I bow to each and every person of West Bengal,” he said.
Meamwhile, BJP State President Samik Bhattacharya has confirmed that the new Bengal government’s swearing-in will take place on May 9, 2026.
The chosen date for the oath-taking, May 9, also coincides with “25 Baishakh” in the Bengali calendar.
The day also marks the 165th birth anniversary of Kobiguru Rabindranath Tagore.
