Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Deb on Thursday in a telephonic conversation apprised Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh about the on-going relief work and sought the Army’s assistance in rescue operations in the flood-hit state.

Biplab Deb in a tweet said, “Apprised Shri @rajnathsingh ji about the flood situation and the ongoing relief work in #Tripura. Requested for assistance from the Army for rescue operations in a few critical locations. @HMOIndia has assured all the necessary support from the Central Government (sic)”.

Tripura has witnessed incessant rains in the last 48 hours, which has caused heavy flooding. The Chief Minister also requested the Home Minister to “urgently” increase the number of National Disaster Response Force personnel in Tripura.

An official statement said the Central government has assured it would provide all the necessary support to Tripura and that it has asked army chief General Bipin Rawat to take necessary action.

Continuous rain has triggered flash floods in Tripura’s Unakoti, Dhalai, Khowai and Gomti districts.

Over 3,500 families are lodged in 189 relief camps as the heavy downpours inundated their houses, according to the report of the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC).

Torrential rain in the past 48 hours has wreaked havoc in the north-eastern states, claiming four lives in Tripura and Manipur, disrupting rail services in Assam and rendering thousands homeless across the region.

In neighbouring Manipur, the state government has declared “holiday” till Friday at all educational establishments and government offices in Imphal and its adjoining districts in view of the flood situation, an official release said.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh is personally supervising the repair work on the river banks that were damaged due to the downpour, a release issued by Information and Public Relations (IPR) Department said.
