The Tamil Nadu election campaign is getting louder and more intense as voting day approaches. In a surprise move on Sunday, TVK chief Vijay cancelled his planned public meeting in Kanyakumari district at the last moment and decided to go ahead with a roadshow instead.

The state is heading toward the April 23 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, and campaigning is allowed only until the evening of April 21. With time running out, all major political parties have stepped up their outreach efforts across constituencies. Leaders are travelling non-stop, holding back-to-back events, trying to connect with as many voters as possible in the final stretch.

DMK president and Chief Minister MK Stalin has been addressing several public meetings every day, carefully splitting his campaign between morning and evening events. On the other side, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami is also on a packed schedule. Naam Tamilar Katchi coordinator Seeman is similarly active touring constituencies and seeking support at the ground level.

Amid this heated political atmosphere, Vijay has been running a fast-paced campaign across Tamil Nadu, campaigning for his party’s ‘whistle’ symbol. His visit to Kanyakumari was expected to include a large public meeting at the Vivekananda College grounds in Agasteeswaram. Party workers had already been working on arrangements on a war footing.

However, the programme was suddenly cancelled on Sunday while preparations were still ongoing. The exact reason for the last-minute change has not been officially explained. Following the cancellation, party workers quickly began dismantling the stage and removing all equipment from the venue.

Roadshow plan finalised, security tightened across Kanyakumari route

After cancelling the public meeting, TVK functionaries confirmed that Vijay would instead take part in a major roadshow in the district. The roadshow will cover the bypass stretch from Mahadhanapuram Roundabout to Zero Point in Kanyakumari.

Authorities have granted police permission for the event, which will be held between 2 pm and 8 pm, along with specific conditions to maintain law and order.

Vijay is scheduled to travel from Chennai to Thoothukudi by air and then continue his journey by road to reach Kanyakumari. During this visit, he is expected to campaign in support of TVK candidates contesting in several important constituencies, including Kanyakumari, Nagercoil, Padmanabhapuram, Vilavancode, Kulachal, and Killiyoor.

Given the expected large turnout of supporters, heavy police security has been deployed along the entire route of the roadshow.
