A threat letter recently received by Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has been traced to Bilaspur district jail in Chhattisgarh. The letter had been sent by notorious criminal Pushpendra Chouhan, a top police officer said in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday.

The police from both Chhattisgarh and Odisha conducted a probe into the matter. Sources in the department said the criminal who sent the letter from jail admitted to have written it. According to the police, he has been lodged in jail in connection with 40-odd cases.

In the letter, he had allegedly demanded Rs 50 crore and warned of “eliminating” Patnaik.

The police sources said Chouhan told them he had written several such letters to people to draw public attention. He has been lodged in jail since 2009.

Chhattisgarh police sources said the prisoner appeared to be mentally unstable and a medical check-up would be conducted soon.
