Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav held a press conference on Thursday after his party’s thumping victory in the Jokihat bypoll in Bihar’s Araria district.

“People have proved that this is the victory of Laluwaad (Lalu Prasad Yadav’s ideology) over Awasarwaad (opportunism),” said an ecstatic Yadav, the younger son of Lalu Yadav.

The former deputy chief minister in the Mahagathbandhan government in Bihar, Yadav thanked the people of Jokihat for “avenging” the u-turn by the Bihar CM.

“Jokihat avenged the insult of mandate by the opportunistic leader,” said Yadav.

“The verdict is a gift to Nitish Kumar who distributed 2 lakh swords on Ram Navami,” said the 28-year-old Yadav, adding, “Today those who spread poison have been defeated.”

In Jokihat, RJD candidate Shahnawaz Alam defeated JD(U)’s candidate Murshid Alam by over 40,000 votes. Shahnawaz Alam is the younger brother of Sarfaraz Alam, who was JD(U)’s lawmaker in Jokihat but joined RJD after Nitish Kumar allied with the BJP. Sarfaraz Alam recently contested from the Araria Lok Sabha seat in March and won.

The JD(U) was criticised for fielding Murshid Alam who has several criminal cases registered against him, including one of gang-rape.

Hitting out at the JD(U) for fielding Murshid Alam, Tejashwi said, “The JD(U) nominated a tainted leader and the people punished those who boast of ‘sushasan‘.”

Tejashwi said the difference by which RJD defeated JD(U) was more than the votes garnered by the party led by Nitish Kumar.

Underlining that this is the third bypoll RJD won since Nitish Kumar left Mahagathbandhan, Tejashwi pointed out that the seats on which his party won were not traditionally their bastions.

Calling the win a victory of Janshakti (people’s power) over Dhanshakti (power of wealth), Tejashwi said Jokihat should serve as a lesson for Nitish that he should awaken his inner voice and listen to it.

“He should resign and break the alliance with the BJP,” he demanded.

In praise of his father, who is in prison following conviction in cases related to fodder scam, Tejashwi said, “Lalu is not just a thought but a science which will take BJP and my Chacha (Nitish Kumar) many lives to understand.”

JD(U)’s defeat might come as a major embarrassment for Nitish Kumar especially since he launched an extensive campaign on this seat located 300 km from Patna.
