A 25-year-old Muslim woman from Maharashtra’s Thane, had last week, lodged a complaint with the Thane police against her husband for allegedly divorcing her via social media platform WhatsApp by sending her a triple talaq message on her mobile phone. The Thane police, on Thursday, booked the 28-year-old man and his parents, said a senior police official.

The woman, in her complaint, said that she received a triple talaq message on WhatsApp from her husband on March 12 this year after which she tried to call him but he did not talk to her, the official said.

The woman said that she got married to the man, who hails from Kalyan, on May 18, 2014. They also have a four-year-old son, said inspector Kalyan Karpe of Bhoiwada police station.

The woman also alleged that her in-laws constantly harassed her. She further alleged that sometime back, her husband and in-laws demanded Rs 5 lakh from her and threw her out of the house, he said.

The woman is currently staying in Bhiwandi with her relative.

The police, on Wednesday, registered a case against her husband and in-laws under IPC Sections 498-A (cruelty), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 504 (intentional insult with an intent to provoke breach of peace), and the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, added Karpe.

The Supreme Court of India had, in August 2017, banned the practice of triple talaq terming it unconstitutional.

Modi government, on September 19 last year, decided to make the practice of instant triple talaq a punishable offence with a jail term of up to three years for the husband.
